The Cure for Severe Morning Sickness (Hyperemesis Gravidarum)

The Cure for Severe Morning Sickness (Hyperemesis Gravidarum)

If you’re feeling stressed and overwhelmed trying to find a cure for your severe morning sickness, I’ve got you covered.

The same hormones that help your body support and nurture your growing baby can also leave you feeling less than fantastic. For many, nausea is one of the first signs of pregnancy. Along with nausea, you may experience tender breasts, light cramping, heightened sense of smell, and fatigue. But the most dreaded of these is often morning sickness. While some nausea is common, when it becomes debilitating and constant, it’s known as Hyperemesis Gravidarum (HG).

I take this seriously because I’ve been there. I was hospitalized multiple times during my pregnancies, losing significant weight and even considering round-the-clock medication. Through trial and error, I found a winning combination of remedies that worked for me—and I’m here to share those with you.

Nutrition

Maintaining proper nutrition is key to feeling better, but it can be challenging when you're nauseated. The general advice for a healthy pregnancy diet is to focus on fresh fruits, vegetables, healthy proteins, and fats, while limiting junk food. Moderation is key, and it's okay to indulge in treats like dark chocolate or nut butters.

If you struggle with keeping down prenatal vitamins, don't worry. Your baby will get most of the nutrients they need from your body. However, if you're concerned, I recommend Buried Treasure Liquid Prenatal Vitamins—they’re easier to digest and helpful for severe cases.

The Role of H. Pylori

There’s evidence that a bacteria called H. pylori, found in the gut, is linked to hyperemesis gravidarum. In fact, 100% of women tested for H. pylori while experiencing severe morning sickness were found to have it.

Fermented foods can help manage gut bacteria. Here’s a list of helpful fermented foods:

- Fermented or pickled veggies

- Bragg’s Apple Cider Vinegar

- Kombucha

- Kefir

- Miso

- Kimchi

- Probiotic yogurt

- Sourdough bread

I found relief by mixing a teaspoon of apple cider vinegar (ACV) into my water throughout the day. This also helped me stay hydrated.

ACV Water Recipe

1 pitcher of filtered water

2-4 tablespoons of Bragg’s Apple Cider Vinegar (with the "mother")

Optional: 2-4 tablespoons of honey (soften in a bit of hot water if needed)

Drink 8-10 glasses a day.

Herbal Remedies

As an herbalist, I prefer making my own tea blends, but there are many ready-made options that can help with morning sickness, such as Earth Mama’s Organic Morning Wellness Tea, Pink Stork Pregnancy Tea, and The Spoiled Mama Pregnancy Nausea Tea.

I found that alfalfa supplements and red raspberry leaf tea helped me the most. My nausea eased when I started this combination, and I felt more balanced.

Other Considerations

CBD Supplement

Though controversial, CBD is becoming more widely accepted and can help with nausea. I used a hemp-based supplement recommended by my naturopath, which dissolved slowly for all-day relief. This is a personal choice and should be discussed with your healthcare provider.

Ginger

Ginger can be helpful in various forms, such as ginger capsules, chews, ginger candy, and Preggie Pops. Although it didn’t stop my nausea entirely, it was helpful for quick relief when I needed it.

Mindfulness and Relaxation

I found that my stress levels directly affected my nausea. On calmer, stress-free days, I felt less sick. Practices like yoga, meditation, and hypnobirthing can make a difference. Consider making time to slow down and manage your stressors for the health of both you and your baby.

Medication

If none of the above options work and you’re unable to keep anything down, contact your care provider. Medications like Zofran (ondansetron) can be prescribed for severe cases of nausea. These come in pill or dissolvable tablet form, making them easier to take if swallowing is a challenge.

Placenta Encapsulation

If you're considering placenta encapsulation, be aware that nausea may return when taking the capsules, especially if they're prepared using the Raw Foods Method. The Traditional Chinese Method may be gentler, or you may choose to have tinctures or salves made instead.
